As a Network Marketer, recruiting folks into your MLM business can be a frustrating, daunting and sometimes humorous task. Here are my all time favorite “reasons I can’t” excuses I’ve heard, and my candid answers I’ve used to weed out the “tire kickers” from the “go getters.”

If you’re an indecisive, tire kicking network marketer looking for inspiration, I encourage you to hit the X to the right of this page and exit immediately…(I may use these network marketing recruiting tactics on you someday, and it won’t be pretty).
If you are a determined, already inspired active network marketer looking for ways to effectively recruit people who are sincerely interested in building a life of personal and financial freedom…read on, feel free to use the tactics in your recruiting travels, share and enjoy the post.
Excuse #1
MLM Recruit: “It costs how much to build a Network Marketing Business? I don’t want to spend any money.”
Anne: “Okay, so you have decided that you are tired of your day J-O-B that sucks the life out of you every waking moment, and you want to build a six figure income that will provide you and your family the personal and financial freedom a network marketing business can provide?”
MLM Recruit: “Yes, I do but $$ [very reasonable amt.] is too much.”
Anne: “Okay. I’ll tell you what…give me the name of one person in the history of the world that built a successful 6 figure income business, and didn’t spend any money to begin, or on tools and education.
MLM Recruit: Complete silence
Excuse #2
MLM Recruit: “I want to build a network marketing business but I’m too busy…I just don’t have the time.”
Anne: “What do you like to do in your spare time? Do you have any hobbies?”
MLM Recruit: Oh, I love to play golf and I usually go to the beach on weekends.”
Anne: “Give up that crap for 6 months and focus on building a Successful Network Marketing business instead. I promise… It’s only going to hurt for a little while and then you will be able to play golf and go to the beach whenever you want, wherever you want…for the rest of your life.”
MLM Recruit: Dead Silence
Excuse #3
MLM Recruit: “I’m not really quite sure…I don’t know very many people and I’m quite shy.”
Anne: “I’m not sure if you’ve heard about this. There’s this new invention called the Internet…it’s a great place to meet friends as well as strangers. It’s actually encouraged on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. As a matter of fact, building an Internet Network Marketing Business is much easier than pounding the pavement and knocking on doors. You don’t even have to talk…you just click your mouse. There are lots of folks online hunting around to join a Network Marketing business. I bet they would join yours.”
MLM Recruit: Absolute Silence
***I have encountered many more excuses such as “I have to ask my wife, husband, mother in law, I tried one of those and they don’t work, my friend said not to join one of those pyramid things…blah, blah, blah.”
What you have just read about is called Commitment Phobia. Commitment phobia is real and it exists in a lot of folks who are plagued by the inability to grow and to leave bad habits and unhealthy patterns behind them.
If you suffer from Commitment Phobia, try replacing those negative and insecure thoughts with positive and constructive ones. Focus your attention and constantly look in the only direction that will help you grow and prosper…Look Forward.

Great, I never knew this, thanks.
Hi Anne, thanks for this post! When I started out in network marketing these were some of the most common objections I encountered. Awesome that you’re putting them out there for free for new marketers!
Hi Dawn,
I think these objections will always be the primary reasons folks will try to dispel the fact that they can actually build a successful Network Marketing business.
Thanks for coming by and have a wonderful day!
Anne
You’re welcome…have a great day.
great post as usual!
Yep, love those lame excuses. Either you want to or you don’t…the choice is yours to make.
Love your sense of directness ; ) That’s pretty much how I think too.
I love how they say they don’t have time, but you see them on Facebook playing farmville all evening. That’s not going to make your dreams come true now is it?!
Have a great day!
Twila
Hi Twila,
Lol…the ever popular farmville…don’t get me started. I have found being direct saves a lot of time and I really don’t like beating around the bush anyway.
There are only so many excuses I can take, and then I move on.
It’s great to see you again!
Anne
Hi Anne,
You bring up some great points.
I used to sit on the phone and try to
talk my prospects into it. I learned my lesson
and either tell them maybe it is not for you or
tell them to grab a pen (GAP) and give them a
number for a recorded call.
Excuses, excuses are a waste of our time, lol.
Tommy D.
Hi Tommy,
I used to do the same thing, then one day a light went on. I realized if I had to try to convince anyone to build a business, I would probably have to also end up babysitting them. Thanks, but no thanks.
Thanks for coming by Tommy and have a wonderful day!

I really love the format of this post, interview style. It’s amazing how many small business owners want all of the glory and the beach-sitting without doing the dirty work first.
Heck, even the big guys that are pulling over 6 figures are working 60 hour weeks. It’s time to pay the pied piper before you can reap the benefits.

Hi Joshua,
I absolutely agree that the dirty work had to be done first. It all goes back to what a person wants and craves more than anything else in their life.
The most successful people of this world, are usually the busiest.
Thanks for coming by Joshua and have a great day!

Thank you Mark,
Thanks for coming by and all the best to you.

I’ve recently started a blog, the information you provide on this site has helped me tremendously. Thank you for all of your time & work.
You’re welcome. I’m happy I could help.
Have a great day!

Nice Post Anne,
I agree that most people don’t want to put in the effort and time to make things happen. Network Marketing can be a challenge in that regard.
I find it best to focus on folks that are like minded ONLINE than bother the friends, family and acquaintances with the “Crabs in a Bucket” mentality.
I am fairly new to Networking, so am finding it a challenge to find these people, but I will with diligence and knowledge.
Steve
Hi Steve,
It is difficult to find people who are completely devoted to building a successful network marketing business…but you only need a few. When you find them, it’s like hitting paydirt.
There are people out there that haven’t discovered the power of attraction marketing…if everyone could roll with this, they’d be in a much different place in their business.
It’s great to see you again, thanks for stopping by.
Anne
Anne, I love this!
One of the things I notice, personally, is the amazing amount of objections people have to doing anything at all…
Gosh, even deciding what to eat or when exercise!
The most unsuccessful people in life answer almost every statement or request with and immediate objection or excuse.
Hi Jason,
I don’t take the objections personal anymore…as you can see I find them amusing. If folks can’t see the tremendous opportunity involved, then I really don’t feel it’s my job to convince them of it.
It’s an honor to have you stop by my blog. Thank you and have a wonderful evening.
Anne
Great job of answering excuses! They are fun, aren’t they? I will re-tweet this link! Lisa
Thanks Lisa,
Sometimes it’s very humorous…thanks for visiting and for sharing. Have a wonderful day!
